Further news of the FFF engine

21/06/2010

Development continues with the second version of the FFF cylinder head and the results are expected in the next 6 weeks.

The first batch of new castings have been delivered from a prestigious UK foundry with a number of modifications incorporated. The quality of the castings is extremely good and the first casting has been almost fully machined apart from the porting. All the machining is fully CNC controlled and this first head is basically the programming prototype to create all the required programming stages to create the finished cylinder head. There are numerous differences to this second generation FFF such that it shares no components from the first generation or of the standard finger follower head.

The valves are now 6.00mm stem diameter and are of the highest quality. The viton valve stem seal is sourced from an American GM engine and is also the spring platform for the new designed performance valve spring. The valve spring reduces in diameter where it meets the retainer and this retainer and the collets are proprietory Ford racing parts. The bucket is now reduced in size to 33.00mm diameter from the previous 35.00mm whilst the design of the head will still allow 14mm of valve lift in the race version.

The weight saving on the valve gear alone amounts to more than 1kg across the cylinder head which is really quite incredible and will make a significant difference to the way the engine is able to rev.

Valve seats are steel and guides are to remain cast iron. Cam location will now be controlled in the cylinder head itself and not by the front bearing caps. All the cma bearing caps are identical and CNC machined from billet.

Porting is critical to the operation of any cylinder head and this is again fully CNC machined to the highest levels. The new casting incorporates extra aluminium in the ports to allow the porting process to be fully optimised and the flow levels from this head are significantly enhanced from the standard heads.

The end product is going to be a major upgrade to the TVR Speed 6 engine with very high horsepowers being indicated from software analysis of the completed design. The machining is of the highest standard as are all the components involved. Weight savings throughout the valve train are massive with the end result that this Evo 2 FFF head will be the best yet.
