Low friction coating process for piston skirts

27/02/2008

Racing Green TVR have developed a low friction coating for the piston skirts of the TVR Speed 6 engine. By carefully preparing the piston skirt and masking the piston the coating can then be applied only to the relevant areas. Gudgeon pin bores and ring lands are unaffected. The dry film lubricant is a resin bonded thermosetting polymer containing both PTFE and MoS2 and is formulated for high-pressure wear applications and provides long-term lubrication for bearing surfaces subjected to extreme pressures up to 150,000 psi. Both new and used pistons can be treated and the process considerably reduces both skirt and bore wear and the resulting issues of loss of compression, oil burning etc. The process also reduces internal frictional losses and hence increases performance. All Racing Green TVRs new pistons now come coated with a dry film lubricant as standard and this process is recommended for TVR Speed 6 engines that are being rebuilt. The coating helps at cold starting and also when the engine has stood for a long time as it provides immediate lubrication on an otherwise dry bore helping to prevent the wearing process which is inevitably at its worst on a cold engine.
